jingle dress

The jingle dress is a significant and beautiful traditional Native American garment with deep cultural importance in the Northern Cheyenne tribe.

The jingle dress is often worn in healing and dance ceremonies. Each jingle, typically made of rolled tobacco lids, snuff lids, or other materials, creates a distinctive sound when the dancer moves. The sound is believed to have a healing effect, both physically and spiritually.

This dance was recorded at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. The conference Transforming Educational Praxis Through Dialogue with Indigenous Perspective invited pre-service education teachers. This program was part of this year’s celebration: North American First People’s Day in Summit County. You can learn more about this yearly celebration at https://walkportagepath.com.
